A Welcome from the President
Australia Sri Lanka Association - Canberra & QueanbeyanCanberra & Queanbeyan
Dear Members of the Canberra and Queanbeyan Sri Lankan Community,
It is with great honour and heartfelt appreciation that I step into the role of President of the Australia Sri Lanka Association (ASLA). I am humbled by the trust placed in me and deeply committed to serving our vibrant and diverse Sri Lankan community across Canberra and Queanbeyan.
Our community has always been built on strong values: unity, respect, cultural pride and mutual support. As we continue to grow, it is more important than ever to preserve our traditions while embracing new opportunities that bring us closer together. My vision as President is to strengthen our connections, support our families and create meaningful experiences that celebrate our shared heritage.
Over the coming year, ASLA will focus on expanding cultural events, enhancing youth engagement, supporting welfare initiatives and building strong partnerships with local organisations. I warmly welcome the ideas, feedback and active involvement of every community member, because ASLA truly belongs to all of us.
I extend my sincere thanks to the outgoing committee for their dedication and leadership, and I look forward to working closely with our new committee, volunteers and community stakeholders. Together, we can create a stronger, more connected and more resilient Sri Lankan community here in the ACT region.
Thank you for your continued support. I am excited for the journey ahead and honoured to represent you.
Warm regards,
Who We Are
The Australia Sri Lanka Association (ASLA) is a volunteer-run, non-profit organisation that supports Sri Lankans and their families in the ACT and surrounding region. We bring people together through cultural events, social gatherings, youth activities, and community service projects.
Our aim is to create a welcoming home-away-from-home, celebrate our heritage, and build strong connections with the broader Australian community.
Our Beginnings & Journey
In the late 1980s, as the Sri Lankan community in Canberra and Queanbeyan grew, families began gathering in homes and local parks to reconnect with familiar food, language, and traditions. Those informal meet-ups gradually evolved into organised cultural events and community dinners.
A formal meeting held in 1988 led to the establishment of the Australia Sri Lanka Association of the ACT. A steering committee was formed, a constitution drafted, and a clear mission emerged: to support new migrants, celebrate Sri Lankan culture, and create a sense of belonging for all generations.
Today ASLA continues that legacy - hosting annual New Year festivals, Christmas celebrations, community lunches, charity initiatives and youth programs that bring people together throughout the year.
